ESMERALDA V. BROWN
Ms Brown is a Sustainable Economic Development and Community Organization Specialist with additional expertise in the areas of Human Rights, Environomental Justice, Racial Justice and Economic Equity. She is a native of the Republic of Panama and a citizen of the United States of America.

1980 - 1987
Resource Coordinator/Specialist for Latin America and the Caribbean: Responsible for constituency education on Latin and the Caribbean for the Women’s Division of the Board of Global Ministries, United Methodist Church Her task was to deal with issues of concern to the Women’s Division constituency in the area of economics, environment and development. As a Non-Governmental Organization representative, she was also responsible to work with the United Nations in her area of specialization.
From 1980 through 1987 Ms.
Brown came to work for the Women’s Division of the General Board of Global Ministries, United Methodist Church at the United Methodist Office for the United Nations. She served as Resource Coordinator for Latin America and the Caribbean.
She provided resource information on Latin America and the Caribbean to the constituency of the Women’s Division, to other church denominations, to women organizations, to the Methodist Women Seminars on National and International Affairs and to other concerned groups.
In addition, Ms. Brown was involved in many conferences, consultations and meetings and has traveled throughout the region of the Americas, Europe and Africa.
Ms. Brown has been involved in the organizing of several workshops, conferences, consultations and meetings in Latin America, the Caribbean, and North America dealing with issues affecting the communities and nations such as: racism and other discriminations that affect peoples of color, militarization, and the situation of women in the Americas.

Ms. Brown is a former Chairperson of the Board and current member and Research Specialist with the Southern Diaspora Research and Development Center.
Ms. Brown is Vice President of the Southern Caucus Access to Finance Task Force.
Ms. Brown is Chairperson of the Respuesta Afro Panamena Organization , 1982 - Present:
Ms. Brown is Chairperson of the Women’s Workshop in the Americas/Taller de Mujeres en Las Americas, Responsible for the dissemination of information to women.
From 1987 to the present:
Ms. Brown serves as the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) representative in Consultative Status with the United Nations, The Service for Peace and Justice in Latin America (SERPAJ-AL). SERPAJ-AL is a human rights organization with chapters in most countries of Latin America. SERPAJ is accredited with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, consultative status category II, and with UNESCO.
Ms. Brown also is the representative of the Commission of Human Rights in Central America which is in Consultative Status with the United Nations.
In 1990-1992, Ms. Brown served as an NGO representative at the U.N. for the Pan-African Movement for the Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED).
In June of 1994, Ms. Brown was elected as the Southern Co-Chair for the NGO Steering Committee of the U.N. Commission on Sustainable Development.
Ms. Brown was a Co-founder in March of 1992 of the Peoples Alliance for the Earth Summit. This organization did the preparatory work for the Non-Governmental Organizations invited to the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, June 1992.
From 1984 to 1985 Ms. Brown served as Consultant and Resource Person for the Non-Governmental Organizations Forum 1985 Planning Committee on Latin America and the Caribbean B International Women’s Decade, Nairobi, Kenya (Africa)
In 1985 she also served as Resource Person for the NGO Forum 1985 Pre-Paratory Meeting for Latin America and the Caribbean held in Cuba.
In June 1990, Esmeralda V. Brown and Rigoberta Menchu Tum, the winner of the 1992 Nobel Peace Prize for Human Rights were both recognized and honored by The Ecumenical Program for Inter-American Communication and Action (EPICA) in Washington for Outstanding Contributions to the Struggle for Human Rights in Central America.
